Power engineers released 2.5 thousand whitefish fry into Kovdozero Lake

Kola WPP LLC arranged fish stocking of the Kovdozersky (Knyazhegubsky) reservoir in the Murmansk region. The wind farm representatives together with the Murmansk branch of Glavrybvod released about 2,500 whitefish fry into the lake. The event was held as part of the artificial reproduction of the aquatic biological resources in the region.

Kovdozero Lake (Knyazhegubskoye) is located on the Kovda River. The Arctic Circle passes through its water area, and in the south there is a border with the Republic of Karelia. This is a cold-water lake covered with ice for half a year. Freshwater frost-resistant fish species such as whitefish, ide, bream, smelt, burbot, perch, roach, pike inhabit here. Since June 8 as a result of the fish stocking the number of juvenile whitefish in the reservoir has increased.

There are about 60 species of whitefish, some of them are included in the Red Book. In total, 2,247 two-year-old fry were released into the lake, each weighing at least 10 grams. Fry for stocking are hatched at the Glavrybvod Murmansk plant in the village of Zelenoborsky, where they are being grown in special pools for two years. The “graduates” are brought to the lake in a special cistern and then they are free to swim.

We’d like to highlight that this is not the first activity aimed at protecting the nature in the Murmansk region, supported by Kola wind farm. In May 2020, the Umba River was stocked with fish when almost 8 thousand one-year-old Atlantic salmon (salmon) were released into the river as well as in April 2021 another 2.3 thousand two-year-old fry. Moreover, in 2021, 223,437 pine seedlings were planted on the Taibol forestry territory, as a result of which a 71.5 ha forest on the shore of Lake Kolozero damaged by a fire in 2018 was restored.
