The Azov Wind Farm is the first renewable asset of EL5-Energo.

In June 2017, following the result of the tender organized by the Russian Government for the construction of wind power generation assets, the company was awarded the project of 90 MW the Azov Wind Farm.

The wind farm includes 26 turbines and can generate about 320 GWh per year while reducing annual CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 260 000 tones. It is located on the coast of the Azov Sea covering an area of 133 hectares.

In February 2018, during the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi, the Governor of the Rostov region Vasily Golubev and management of Enel Russia (currently EL5-Energo) signed an Agreement on Wind Farm Construction in Don region. The Azov Wind Farm project was included into the list of Top-100 Priority Investment Projects of the Rostov region, so called “The Top-100 of Governmental Projects”.

On May 23, 2019, the Rostov region saw the Solemn Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Azov Wind Farm construction.

In May 2020, the first set of main equipment (towers and hubs for WTGs) arrived at construction site of the Azov Wind Farm. The first set of towers included 3 sections with the maximum length of almost 30 meters and the weight of 79 tones, while their total weight was 200 tones. The set was delivered from Taganrog to the construction site in about 12 hours. Hubs and nacelles have come a long way on land and sea from manufacturer’s site in the Leningrad region to their destination.

Starting from May 1st, 2021, the Azov Wind Farm obtained the right to supply electrical energy and capacity to the Russian Wholesale Electricity Market. This right was given after receiving relevant notification from the Trading System Administrator of wholesale electricity market. The first Azov Wind Farm’s kilowatt-hours of green electricity flowed into the wholesale market!

The solemn ceremony dedicated to the opening of the Azov Wind Farm, with installed capacity of 90 MW was held on June 25th, 2021. The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Aleksander Novak, Governor of the Rostov region Vasiliy Golubev, management of Enel Russia (currently EL5-Energo), and regional authorities.

The Rostov region has favorable natural potential due to a combination of unique water and wood resources, and beneficial climatic conditions. The region hosts 70 natural monuments, 7 specially protected natural areas, a nature park, a biosphere reserve and a nature reserve of national importance. All wind farms of EL5-Energo, including the Azov Wind Farm project, were developed considering habitats, animals and birds migration routes in order to minimize the impact on their normal life. The Company also contributes to the preservation of biodiversity in the south of Russia. In 2019, our colleagues participating in construction activities of the Azov Wind Farm, together with Azov-Black Sea production unit of Glavrybvod FSI, released 325 species of sturgeon into the Kuban river. In 2022, 20 nesting platforms for red-listed White-tailed Sea Eagles were constructed in the Don delta with support of the Azov WPP. To support the rare raptors the platforms are installed on trees in biotopes - places of natural habitat of the species, away from populated areas, transport highways and industrial facilities.
