Starting the era of renewable energy in the Arctic

On March 1, 2023, Kola wind power plant officially changed its status: from being a project to the largest operating wind farm in the world beyond the Arctic Circle. On May 12, 2023, on the territory of the new power facility in the Murmansk Region the commissioning of the second stage of Kola WPP was officially announced in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak, Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrey Chibis and Chief Executive Officer of PJSC LUKOIL Vadim Vorobyov. Thus, the total installed capacity of the wind farm reached 201 MW.

Kola wind farm is a unique and long-awaited facility. The potential of the wind, the landscape, infrastructure opportunities – all these have been the prerequisites for construction of a wind farm in the region. We brought together the best experts from all over the country, gathered the best international practices, evolved the entire project thoroughly and got prepared to the harshest weather conditions to take a thorny path to develop the Arctic renewable energy.

May 12, 2023, becomes a historic date. We managed to implement a pioneering project in the Arctic, which will become a foregoer for other northern regions.

Kola wind farm is contemporary, reliable and safe energy for residents and enterprises of our country. The planned output of the wind farm is about 750 million kWh per year preventing emissions of up to 600 thousand tons of CO2-eq. annually.

The wind farm has become an integral part of the Russian energy system, contributing to diversification of its energy balance and to the national energy security.

At all stages of Kola wind farm’s implementation, the company performed a comprehensive assessment of the factors affecting the environment, developed and applied the measures to prevent and reduce possible negative impacts. The maximum respect to the nature was the top priority.

During its presence in the Murmansk region EL5-Energo has obtained a northern character in its DNA. We have become a partner to educational and voluntary institutions, charitable foundations and cultural organizations and we have formed an integral part of the life of local communities.

Kola WPP commissioning opens up new opportunities for renewable energy beyond the Arctic Circle, and our team is ready to warm the country with the energy of the North.
