May 22 is the International Day of Biological Diversity and the day of the adoption of the specialized UN Convention. This is a celebration of the diversity of life on Earth in all its manifestations and a great opportunity to address the topic of the day "Building a shared future for all life".
Biodiversity is the result of evolution over billions of years under the influence of natural processes and anthropogenic factors.
Biodiversity most often refers to the richness of the species diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms. According to scientists, the real number of species is about 13 million. However, according to various estimates, this figure varies from 3 to 100 million.
Despite the universal recognition that biodiversity is a common human asset and the greatest value for the present and future generations, the number of wild flora and fauna continues to decline at an unprecedented rate. And this is because of anthropogenic activities. Man depletes resources faster than nature has time to restore them.
To stop this destructive activity, every inhabitant of the planet, enterprise and state must become part of the movement for change to improve environmental aspects and take responsibility for nature conservation and ecosystem restoration. We all lack balance in our relationship with the planet.
Conservation of biodiversity will allow humanity to be healthier, achieve the global goals of sustainable development and get over the climate crisis.
Enel Russia has special provisions enshrined in the Biodiversity Policy as of 2020, and in 2021 the Action Plan for the Conservation and Protection of Biodiversity was approved.
Ensuring environmental safety at all assets of Enel Russia is one of the priorities of our team. At the power plants many projects aimed at protecting flora and fauna are implemented: installation of fish protection devices at all thermal power plants, bioacoustic bird repellers at Konakovskaya GRES, stocking of local water bodies, the use of signal coloring of the blades at the Azov wind farm to protect avifauna in the daytime and signal lights - for protection at night, implementation of the wastewater treatment project at Sredneuralskaya GRES. In addition to major technical projects, employees of the power plants and offices regularly take part in environmental events for landscaping urban areas, community clean-up days, and conduct eco-lessons in kindergartens and schools.
