Enel and Rusnano representatives discussed partnership in “green” hydrogen at SPIEF 2021

Within the framework of St.Petersburg International Economic Forum, a meeting was held between representatives of Enel and RUSNANO where the two parties discussed the cooperation in the field of “green” hydrogen.  The two companies are studying the possibility of creation of the first in Russia project aimed at production of “green” hydrogen on the basis of a wind power plant in the Murmansk region.

During the meeting Enel Group was represented by Simone Mori, Enel Group’s Head of Europe, Stephane Zweguintzow, Enel Country Manager in Russia, and Viktor Naboichenko, Head of Regulatory and Government Relations in Enel Russia. On behalf of RUSNANO, the meeting was attended by Sergey Kulikov, Chairman of the Executive Board of the management company RUSNANO, and Alisher Kalanov, Head of Investment Division RES.

The meeting was dedicated to discussing partnership between two companies in the field of hydrogen. Earlier, the companies signed a Memorandum envisaging the study of a project for hydrogen production on the basis of renewables at Kolskaya WPP (201 MW) site. It is a wind farm of Enel Russia, that is located on the Kola peninsula in the Murmansk region, and currently is in active phase of construction. The wind farm is the largest in Russia beyond the Arctic circle, it will be able to generate around 750 GWh per year, avoiding the emission of around 600,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The wind facility will consist of 57 turbines covering a 257-hectare area.

“The topic of “green” hydrogen production becomes more popular around the globe. At the level of Enel Group, we are actively working in this field in many countries of our presence. And, of course, we consider Russia as a potential region for implementation of such projects. The mutual project with RUSNANO is the first step towards exploring this potential in different regions of Russia.”

– Enel’s Head of Europe Simone Mori

“Russia has enormous potential both for the production and use of "green" hydrogen. The state and private companies are more and more actively involved in the work, the goal of which is to form a high-tech and export-oriented hydrogen energy industry in Russia. RUSNANO intends to pay great attention to the development of this new industry and to participate in the implementation of hydrogen projects using the most modern technologies. Successful implementation of a joint pilot project with Enel will prove the feasibility of the concept of ”green” hydrogen production and scale up the project in future, which will contribute to the implementation of the national hydrogen strategy.”

– Sergey Kulikov, Chairman of the Executive Board of the management company RUSNANO

Speaking at the plenary session of the St.Petersburg Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that one of the country’s priority projects is the reduction of emissions in all sectors and increasing the share of low-carbon sources.
